WIDDA
Weir Indigenous Didgeridoo and Dance Academy
For three consecutive years Weir State School has achieved success in winning the prestigious National Indigenous Reconciliation Award in the Wakakirri National Story Dance Festival. Our success within the competition has grown a strong culture of First Nations people dance and music leading us to establish the WIDDA program.
The academy students engage in First Nations people learning each Friday afternoon. The Wulgurukaba Walkabouts are consulted to ensure local traditional cultures and respects are threaded within our performances and school programming. Leading on from the boys’ group success, a girls’ WIDDA group will be established later this year.
The aim of our academy is to:
- Preserve and celebrate First Nations peoples’ culture
- Enhance cultural awareness and understanding
- Empower our First Nations students through engagement
- Improve student attendance
- Strengthen community connections
