Defence Service Transition Aide (DSTA)

Weir State School was one of the first schools to employ a DSTA, approximately ten years ago. Our school community has embraced the DSTA program and it has become an integral part of our support network.

The DSTA program was originally designed to support families of Defence serving members as they move between schools. Now this support has been extended to cover the many difficult and challenging aspects of military life, particularly deployment.

The role of the DSTA in our school:

Welcoming

  • All new students complete a welcome book (includes school orientation).
  • Other activities are organised according to need and age group.
  • A buddy system is used to help new students adjust.

Farewelling

  • All new students complete a farewell book and other activities are organised according to need and age group.

Deployment

  • Children who are affected by deployment receive regular visits.
  • Activities are organised according to need and age group and may include deployment books, art and crafts, things to send away, video messages or dioramas.

Other support

  • Kids club, called '3D' Club, which stands for Defence Drop-in Day
  • Afternoon teas for parents
  • Your point of contact within the school for any concerns or needs
  • Information on the school
  • Information on the Defence community
  • Newsletters
  • Educate staff on the needs of Defence families

We hope you will enjoy your time at our school.
